Rotator Cuff Tendinitis

What is Rotator Cuff Tendinitis?

The shoulder is made up of three bones: the scapula (shoulder blade), the clavicle (collarbone), and the humerus (upper arm bone). The rotator cuff is a group of four tendons that stabilize the head of the humerus within the shallow socket of the scapula. These tendons are the ‘ropes’ that anchor the muscles to the bone, enabling arm elevation and rotation.

Rotator cuff tendinitis, also known as impingement syndrome, refers to inflammation of the tendons in the shoulder’s rotator cuff. These tendons are crucial for shoulder mobility and stability. When inflamed, they can cause pain and restrict movement, making daily tasks and certain arm motions difficult.

One of the most common injuries in Dr. Ben Mayo’s orthopedic office is shoulder pain. As a fellowship trained shoulder surgeon, Dr. Ben Mayo regularly sees patients in the Detroit area with rotator cuff tendinitis to determine the best treatment options for them. Rotator cuff tendinitis often arises due to the wear and tear associated with age or repetitive overhead activities, such as painting, lifting, or throwing sports. It can also develop from acute injuries or because of the natural shape of one’s bones, which can cause the tendons to rub against the shoulder blade.

Symptoms for rotator cuff tendinitis typically include:

  • A dull ache deep in the shoulder.
  • Discomfort while sleeping, especially when lying on the affected shoulder.
  • Weakness in the arm and difficulty with overhead tasks.
  • Pain when lifting the arm or making specific movements.
  • A cracking sound when moving the shoulder in certain positions.

In many cases, with rest and appropriate treatment, tendinitis will heal over time. However, if overuse continues, the condition can worsen and potentially lead to a rotator cuff tear, which is a more severe injury.

A physical examination, where the physician assesses the arm’s range of motion and strength, is the primary diagnostic tool. Imaging tests like X-rays can rule out bone spurs or other abnormalities, while an MRI or ultrasound can show soft tissue inflammation and other potential issues.
